Gametes and Beyond: The Sperm
This section is for the anatomy stuff. One post after another, I hope this will cover various aspects of anatomy that may seem quite foggy to the average person. I hope to bring it down to a simpler explanation for people so you can understand the anatomy without feeling like you need a PhD in medicine to follow along.
Today we are going to talk about sperm! I would discuss semen, but that would become too complicated for just one blog post, thus, we shall simply address sperm and go from there. Given that sperm are such fascinating little gametes, we will likely have to discuss them again later, but for now I will give a brief overview.
Sperm develops in the seminiferous ducts. Men can produce up to 1,000 sperm per second. That may seem really fast, but the average ejaculate contains around 180 million sperm. It takes 2 1/2 months to produce one mature sperm.
