IS IT PORN? Degrees of Eroticism and Ambiguity
A fallacy is an argument or a part of an argument that is constructed in such a manner that it is not logically correct (they don't add up, dammit).
Equivocation Fallacy:
A)
- The image below is explicit and holds no literary, artistic, political or scientific merit.
- Explicit erotic images without literary, artistic, political or scientific merit are pornography.
- The image below is pornography.
B)
- That pic shows naughty bits and isn't important
- Pics that aren't important are porn
- The pic is porn
C) (not really the equivocation fallacy)
- The internet is for porn.
- The picture below is porn.
- The picture below belongs on the internet.

By most people's standards, the pic above, though a very poor drawing, would not be considered porn. But it is sometimes the case that various fallacies of ambiguity (crazy thinking) are used to claim some things are porn that most people wouldn't consider porn. It does not help when the term 'pornography' itself is defined badly:
Definition from dictionary.com:
Pornography: obscene writings, drawings, photographs, or the like, esp. those having little or no artistic merit.
Both the words 'obscene' and 'artistic merit' are things which are subjective. In other words, each individual examining an idea or object may have their own opinion of if something is obscene or artistic, both, or neither (one guy's fapping material is another guy's wallpaper ... well, actually, it is both for both *sigh* great examples are impossible for some subjects)..
Question for the readers*: The above picture also shows another thing that makes the term 'pornography' difficult to define. Each form in the image is in varying states of nakedness or clothedness and varying positions that may or may not be considered erotic by themselves. If one were to make a scale based on either variable, and the forms were real people rather than drawings, at what point would one draw a line that would determine what was pornographic? *I'm going to start putting questions into various posts for people to respond to, if they so choose. The questions are designed to get people to think about each topic a little and to encourage feedback.
