I definitely believe there is a lowering of self-esteem due to this issue. Now, I have problems with my self-esteem ANYWAY, and I often find myself making self-disparaging penis-length jokes to my girlfriend.

Part of the problem is that though the bigger-is-better mantra is often claimed to be a myth, it's not UNIVERSALLY claimed to be one. If my partner is telling me that my size is fine, well, it's true that she's predisposed to want to improve my esteem and lessen my anxiety. So I often find myself taking this positive feedback with a grain of salt.

I'm reminded of something I saw, though I can't remember where. Basically, it was a woman talking about size anxiety. She said that a penis looks a lot bigger when you're right next to it than when you're looking down on it from above. There was an article I read once that said basically the same thing. Never trust the view you have of your own penis.

Add to that, bigger dicks can actually cause problems. Without getting too specific, I have yet to find a condom that's not painful to wear, and my wife gets quite sore if we haven't made love in a while.

This may go too far, but I almost think that your self-image doesn't count when it comes to sex. When we've reached "get naked" mode, I couldn't care less about any imperfections my wife might have. I imagine the same it true for her.
