Users of long-running and popular adult ‘dating’ service Adult Friend Finder tend not to be that shy about showing off, but a hack that has released details of up to 3.9 million users might be one step too far when it comes to being exposed online.

UK outlet Channel 4 News broke the story yesterday and revealed that names, address, phone numbers, IPs, preferences and even if people were looking for extra-marital affairs were made public. With the site boasting up to 63 million users worldwide, there is probably a lot of profile deletion occurring as you read this.

Brian Honan – InfoSec expert – tweeted that he had “always thought adult dating sites would be a perfect target for criminals to breach & use details for extortion.” One victim of the hack told Channel 4 News that he had already received a deluge of spam emails since the leaked info was splashed across the internet. A statement from Adult Friend Finder presented the usual bland overtures.

“FriendFinder Networks Inc… understands and fully appreciates the seriousness of the issue. We have already begun working closely with law enforcement and have launched a comprehensive investigation with the help of leading third-party forensics expert. We pledge to take the appropriate steps needed to protect our customers if they are affected.”

A number of users – hacked or otherwise – will rightly be worried about potential blackmail. A number of users may well have jobs of importance, distinction or related to matters of national security. Curiously, other data emanating from the hack shows that the site’s male to female ration is 16:1. Confirmation – if it were at all needed – that many of those on the site had been jerking into the abyss all this time.
