If you ever feel a little too oblivious about whatever’s happening around you, there is now a story that will make you feel like you’re completely on top of things.

A 38-year-old Scottish woman apparently was walking around for 10 years with a sex toy inside her vagina without ever knowing.

If you’re wondering how that’s even possible, you are joining a large group of people who also can’t quite grasp how this happened.

While the woman acknowledges having been drunk when the object was originally used, it is unclear how she couldn’t feel it the next day – let alone the following entire decade. An article on the Journal of Sexual Medicine pointed out that the woman had a normal IQ, no signs of depression or psychosis and had not been abused, which would be factors that could have justified how she disregarded the whole ordeal.

After requiring surgery to remove it at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, the sex toy was revealed to be 5 inches long, which is even more baffling. A “bullet” or a smaller toy I’d maybe understand. A 5-inch sex toy stuck in there for that long seems like something that should have been felt.

The woman showed up at the hospital in the first place after contracting sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection that can damage multiple organ systems, causing them to fail. She also had experienced severe weight loss and urinary incontinence.

After the X-rays showed the sneaky sex toy lodged inside her, she was also diagnosed with a vesicovaginal fistula (urine flowing into the vagina through an abnormal way) and an obstructive uropathy (urine flowing back into the kidneys after its way to the bladder was blocked.) The surgeons managed to successfully remove the toy, while repairing the possibly fatal damages.

According to the Daily Mail, the woman recalled using the toy with a partner 10 years ago, but didn’t remember removing it at any point, which would be, you know… advisable, when using a sex toy. Most people don’t seem to have that much of a problem remembering to actually take the damn thing out after they’re done.

While the Journal of Sexual Medicine reports this may be the first time a sex toy has been left inside a woman for such a long time, a review of similar cases revealed that the longest known retention of a foreign object was 35 years.

Jeez, I guess when it becomes a habit, that’s just part of you at some point. Still, I must admit that now my memory and overall health neglect don’t feel nearly as bad in comparison.
