Yep, that’s right, there’s a new kid in town. Motorola’s Moto 360, which is set to be launched first in the US this summer, is a smart timepiece that aims to compete against the Sony Smartwatch and the Samsung Galaxy Gear. How any of them will fare once Apple’s highly awaited iWatch is finally available is anyone’s guess.

The Moto 360

Until then, however, tech-heads will be pleased enough. The Moto 360 is powered by Google’s new Android Wear smartwatch SDK. Up until January of this year, some of you may recall, Motorola was owned by Google, which explains why the Moto 360 can use the tech. The Moto 360 also makes use of ‘Ok Google’ voice control, which means you can ask it niggling questions like who painted the Mona Lisa or discovered penicillin (though not the current geographical location of God) or more practical stuff, like finding out when you’re suppose to catch your train or scheduling dates, times, alarms, appointments and all those other little things that make up a person’s day-to-day life.

Of course, like any other smart device worth its minerals, the Moto 360 will also provide you with ‘subtle’ alerts and notifications. According to the official Motorola blog, a twist of the wrist will be all that is necessary to find out what your being alerted to or notified of.

What the Moto 360 also has – and which sets it above the other smartwatches out there – is that it looks like a watch, and not a mini-phone fixed to a strap. It actually has a round face! Remember watches with round faces? So not only is Motorola making an appeal to the tech-heads but it is also saying a suave hello to the fashion-conscious futuristas, those who like their wearable tech to look good. And sleek, black and simple, the Moto 360 does look sweet.

Has Motorola’s time arrived? We shall see.
