Top 5 Songs To Get You Pumped Up For The Office Again

We are already gliding our way through January but let’s guess… you’ve not stuck to any of those measly resolutions you set yourself, the house is still a mess and you’re operating nowhere near 100%?

We’re right, aren’t we? It’s fine, don’t worry. We’re not here to shame anybody, just to point out some facts. There’s nothing wrong with admitting you need a little help.

…and we’re guessing the place you need the most help is the daily assault course known as “Dragging Your Slumped Body Out Of Bed For Work Every Morning”. Again, it’s fine. It’s a worldwide phenomenon with no known cure (except winning the lottery) so you’re not the only one to suffer.

What did you miss the least? Forcing yourself to eat in the morning? Playing at safe-cracker with the temperamental shower and its propensity to go from ICE COLD to BOILING HOT by simply breathing on it? Cramming yourself into a sardine can generously called ‘public transport’ to get to the office? Or are your colleagues just extreme fools?

Be it one, all or any other choices, frankly there’s not much we can really do for you. We are only a website after all. But look, we CAN offer you a little something to get the blood pumping. You can buy it in small doses for a few dollars a time, it’s everywhere, even your pops used to be into it…

We’re talking music, of course? Why? What did you think we meant? Here are five songs ideal for the headphones to that will give you the quick lift you need to get you right back into the swing of things.

Kanye West – Black Skinhead

So a big portion of the song’s audience will find it difficult to relate to the song’s overall theme and message but with its propulsive death drums, distorted hooks, fierce vocal delivery and even what seems to be an appearance by a jackdaw in the studio at the song’s end it’s hard to deny that Black Skinhead a place on this list.

Its appearance in The Wolf Of Wall Street has kept the song in the public attention long past its original release date, and even now, it’s hard to imagine it going away for a good while yet.

Beck – Sexx Laws

Using music to get ‘pumped’ isn’t always about aggression. Sometimes you need a helluva tune to help you get a spring in your step and believe that, if only for a few minutes, it might be alright after all.

Beck, the multi-talented and somewhat crazy songsmith, has dipped in and out of nearly every genre possible across the length and breadth of his career. Sexx Laws is no different, guiding listeners by the ear through soul, disco, funk, jazz and, courtesy of a neat little banjo at the end, bluegrass too. They don’t make ‘em like Beck anymore, that’s for sure.

Beastie Boys – Make Some Noise

New York’s finest had the rare superpower of making nearly every song they created memorable, addictive and fun. It’s a lesson a lot of other artists could do with taking note of any time they enter the studio.

There are far more obvious Beasties songs to pick from here – Fight For Your Right, Sabotage, Intergalactic, No Sleep ‘Till Brooklyn – but Make Some Noise, from 2011’s Hot Sauce Committee Pt. II is a swinging, low-down, filthy collection of rhymes that shows the tricky trio at their best.

The video is also a damned treat too (and perhaps one of the all-time greats), featuring cameos from Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen, Steve Buscemi, Ted Danson, Will Ferrell, Jack Black and just about anyone who lives in California and has an actor’s union card!

RIP MCA – we all still miss you down here!

SBTRKT – New Dorp, New York

That first push you need to get out of bed is the hardest one, and this ridiculously good number will probably have you clicking your fingers before you’re even properly awake.

The video is rather fitting, too – a good summary of the dog-eat-dog world you’re getting ready to be a part of again. Peak of the empire, indeed.

The Men – Different Days

Maybe a little different from the rest of the picks, but The Men have slowly carved out a reputation as a group that refuse to compromise their sound, energy and, as this song shows, ability to hammer out a great song.

If this song, its frenetic musicianship disguising lyrics that lament the passing of youth and innocence, doesn’t get you running into the office to make the most of your time and life, then nothing will.
Hey, work can suck the long and hard one sometimes. We all know that. Good luck out there, friends.
