TV Shows We're Looking Forward To In 2015

You’ll have heard the phrase ‘Gold Age of Television’ bandied around a lot lately. The past few years have seen the creation and broadcasting of some unforgettable shows such as Breaking Bad, The Wire, True Detective, The Sopranos, Mad Men and so on. The list is pretty spectacular.

…but that’s all in the past. Forget about it. We’re looking to the future, and 2015 is promising even more fantastic television to take your mind off the big, bad world outside.

Better Call Saul

We all know there won’t be a sequel to Breaking Bad, but to not capitalize on the runaway success of Walter and Jesse’s descent into drug-manufacturing madness would be somewhat crazy.

So, here’s the compromise: it’s a prequel and it features one of Breaking Bad’s most memorable characters – rough-around-the-edges lawyer Saul Goodwin. It also features Mike Ehrmantraut, the gruff and intimidating fixer who met with an unfortunate end in Breaking Bad.

Predictably, AMC have gone full throttle with promoting this show. The official website is a sweet parody of those tacky infomercial-esque lawyers we see all the time, and the trailers being released slowly but surely give us hope that this is more than just a cash-in on Breaking Bad’s popularity.

Want something to watch next year? Better call Saul!

True Detective (season two)

Although HBO have yet to confirm a release date for the second series of this intense look at crime, detection and the people involved on both sides, it’s strongly rumored that we will at least see new episodes in the coming year.

With Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, the stars of season one, not re-appearing for the second time around, it’s a chance for those involved in the show’s creative process to wipe the slate clean and make a new approach.

So what can we expect from season two? In short…we’re not sure. What we do know is that season two’s scope will be a lot broader than its predecessor, with a big leading cast of Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams and everybody’s favorite terrible actor, Vince Vaughan (he’s bad, admit it). As for plot, episode structure…nothing, zip, nada. But surely it’s better to go into a new show fresh and ready for anything, right?

Aquarius

For all of the terrible crimes he instructed his followers to commit, Charles Manson is something of a cultural icon. He is the epitome of the American Dream turned sour at a time when the zeitgeist called for free love and peace. So, with that in mind, it’s a little strange to think that apart from a few gaudy documentaries and one or two terrible movies, the legend of Manson and his murderous mob has never been fully explored.

Aquarius, to be shown on NBC, is a gritty 60s cop drama about a policeman who goes undercover to infiltrate the Manson Family in the run-up to the murders at the Tate household. But…well, we all know he won’t stop it but we all knew the ending to Titanic and look how successful that was!

Note: the video below is fan-made as no official trailer exists, but it should give you some clues as to how it will look.

Last Man On Earth

The apocalypse doesn’t always have to be a doom-and-gloom fest; you should lighten up sometime! Fox’s The Last Man on Earth purports to offer a light-hearted look at post-life. Created by and starring Will Forte, the show places our titular character in the middle of an as-yet-unnamed tragedy that eradicates the human race.

Will our man survive on his own? Will he find another person? Most importantly, will he find love?

Wayward Pines

With the awesome news that Twin Peaks is set to return in 2016, what better way to prep the ground than with Wayward Pines, which seems to take Twin Peaks’ surreal small-town life but adds to it some genuine terror and suspense.

In fact, we could probably list a few more apparent influences such as The Truman Show and Silent Hill. Overall it looks like it could be one of the biggest TV hits of the year so far.

Starring Matt Dillon, Juliette Lewis and a host of other Oscar winners and nominees, Wayward Pines promises to shock, scare and create some mystery. Perfect!
