It was only a matter of time before it became a TV show! Ah the infamous selfie now has a home on television. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about (and you probably aren’t), let me enlighten you.

Since her departure from Doctor Who, I have steadily been missing Karen Gillan. She left a hole not even watching her kick-ass in Guardians of the Galaxy could fill. What I need is another TV show, full of just her. And boy did I get it.

TV's Selfie: One Worth Taking A Look At

Enter Selfie, a new TV show on ABC that is the modern day, Internet-fueled equivalent of My Fair Lady, which was the modern day Pygmalion of its time. Eliza Dooley (they weren’t being subtle with this being My Fair Lady inspired) is a shallow-self-and-social-media-obsessed-nerd-gone-wrong whose claim to crawl out of the nerd box from high school was to get Internet famous. As she says she, “Blew out my curls and pushed up the girls,” and she was instafamous (it’s a thing).

Of course that also means that she’s a shallow shell of a human being incapable of normal human interaction. Enter John Higgs (played by John Cho, my favorite stoner after Kumar) who is roped in (by her) to rebrand her into someone who is human after a particularly shameful airplane incident where she realizes she has no real friends (cue sad music).

Is it predictable? Yes! Will they fall in love? You betcha! But it’s still charming as hell and, well, Karen Gillan! There’s a part of me that is delighted that someone is finally speaking about our culture’s obsession with selfies and how we trade ‘like’ for real human interaction. And yet, I am especially curious as to how they treat this – honestly I’d hate it if hey just boxed everywhere as ‘bad’ and ‘good’. I really would like to see a show that can play nice with technology and at the same time infuse some humanity into our love for tech.

Sure Selfie might seem silly on the offset, but the potential is there. Please don’t disappoint!
