“1963, suburban Cincinnati. That’s how my mother feels about holy matrimony,” Carole explained, when asked why she couldn’t tell her mother about her swinger lifestyle.

It’s impressive that 11 years could change society’s mindset that quickly, but such was the cultural jump from 1963 to 1974, the year in which Confessions of a Young American Housewife was released.

Carole (Mary Mendum, this time under the name Rebecca Brooke) was a young girl who, along with her husband Eddie and their neighbors and fellow married friends Anna and Pete, was fully enjoying the freedom their lifestyle allowed them. The foursome hooked up on a regular basis, often all together in the same room.

Carole’s mother (Jennifer Welles), a 37-year old widow and proto-MILF, was coming to stay with her daughter for a while, which implied they couldn’t do all they were accustomed to for the duration of the visit. But naturally, everyone was so shocked and turned on when they laid eyes on her super hot mom, that those prudent thoughts went out the window quickly.

Her mother’s name was Jennifer, but everyone called her Mrs. Robinson (because of course they did.) And when it came time to confess to her mom about her lifestyle, Jennifer didn’t respond well. After all, “(her) baby was a husband swapper.”

But Mrs. Robinson was a lusty woman, and slowly but surely the foursome sort of became a very, very wrong five-some. Which, as you can imagine, created some tension between mother and daughter.

After her sexuality was awoken, there was no stopping Mrs. Robinson. She had her first lesbian experience, banged her daughter’s husband and flirted desperately with the supermarket delivery boy.

While the movie is technically softcore, it hardly feels that way. I mean, yes, there are few — if any, really — actual genital shots, but it doesn’t really feel like it. Most sex scenes are passionate and entertaining. The lesbian scenes, in particular, look nice.

Both, mother and daughter, do a solid job. And though it’s hard to believe that could be their relationship — their real life age difference can’t be bigger than five years; they honestly look like sisters — they sell the tension between them well.

While all this sexual breakthrough was going on, Jennifer actually started a more romantic endeavor when she begins dating the much younger delivery boy. We see alternated scenes of Jenny fucking all of her daughter’s sexual partners and then going on sweet park dates with the young dude.

Some comic relief is looked for through Anna (Chris Jordan), a skinny girl who seems to shove any kind of food (and other stuff, too, I guess) up her face. The “always eating” gag sort of gets old after a while. She sure did love her cream pies, though (I actually do mean baked pies made out of cream, guys.)

Sometimes it’s hard to properly rate movies like this — or several other Joe Sarno films. If you look at it from a porn perspective, it certainly seems more complex and with a lot more attention to character development than most things in the genre. If you compare it to a mainstream R-rated film that explores a similar subject, then the movie is lacking something.

Still, it’s an undeniable attempt at making something more substantial within the adult industry, and that alone validates Sarno’s films’ historical importance.
