Hello world! I’ve just emerged from a night of binge watching Tina Fey’s new show on Netflix! I love me some Fey, and when 30 Rock ended, it was sad city for not just me but all of the show’s fans. Soon enough though, news of Fey working on a new project emerged and we all waited eagerly; And now here we are with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt newly released on Netflix and fully binge watched by me.

I seriously question the wisdom of Netflix’ decision to put all episodes online at once because yesterday I forfeited my sleep in order to watch Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. What started as mild curiosity ended with me writing this article still humming and pretending to know the lyrics to the theme song.

If you don’t know already the show is about Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), an ex-cult member from Indiana who along with three other women was locked away in an underground bunker for 15 years, believing that the apocalypse came and destroyed everything above ground. Yes. That is the premise of the show. Once rescued, she decides to stay in New York City with the rescue money that she receives. This show is about how she tries to create a regular life after missing out of most of the nineties and early 2000s.

Yes it is bubble-gummy and bright and chirpy. But it is also funny as hell with Tina Fey’s signature humor peppered throughout. And both Tituss Burgess (who plays Kimmy’s roommate) and Jane Krakowski (who is Kimmy’s rich boss) are amazing alongside Kemper.

The thing I like the most about the show is that true to its name, the title character Kimmy is quite literally unbreakable. She is chirpy but not in that people pleasing, annoying way that makes you want to gouge your eyes out. But in a way that kids are chirpy because they truly expect the best to happen. She’s also tough, as she puts it, “I’m pretty, but tough. Like a diamond. Or beef jerky in a ballgown.”

Kimmy behaves in a way I imagine other women might if they weren’t influenced by the world around them (she got kidnapped for the cult when she was eight, thus bypassing all those years of trying to fit it, being told that she’s too fat or thin and all other things that little girls go through). She’s weird in the way we are all kinda weird but are too afraid to show it, but Kimmy don’t care! In fact she doesn’t even know she’s being weird. In short I wanna be Kimmy – minus being kidnapped and stuck in a bunker for 15 years.

Seeing the dismal state of new sitcoms on TV currently, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt comes as a welcome breath of fresh air in a stale underground bunker. Now on Netflix.
