There’s a war going on between lawmakers and the porn industry in California since the use of condoms was made compulsory in November 2012. The new rules have had such an impact on the industry that permits to make adult films are said to have dropped by 95 percent. Still, filmmakers are not resting on their laurels and are desperate to come up with new innovations to get around the laws.

Film director Tony DiMarco from Falcon Studios is one of the first to introduce CGI special effects we are probably more used to from Hollywood blockbusters such as ‘Avatar’ and ‘Inception’ to make rubbers vanish in post-production.

“I wanted to give the impression of a pre-condom movie, but use condoms as we do in every scene we film. I found a way to film the movie safely and effectively, while giving the experience that I had intended and using modern stars,” DiMarco said.

Every scene featuring penetration in his latest contribution to the world of porn, California Dreamin’ 1, suggesting there will be sequels, were filmed with the performers using condoms.

All condoms were subsequently removed during post-production using airbrushing in some cases, while in others he turned to CGI to overlay the original image with computer-generated genitalia.

Falcon Studios has used condoms in its flicks since the 1980s, but these new special effects techniques make it possible for them to shoot movies that appear as ‘non-condom’ productions, which appeals to more viewers.

Many porn studios have left Los Angeles after the new regulations came into effect and moved to cities where raw-dogging isn’t illegal. Las Vegas and Miami have both seen an increase in porn production lately.

There have been outcries for condom use in the porn industry for decades already, and with the discovery of the HIV virus, these cries have grown louder. They escalated further a few years ago when porn stars started revealing that they had tested HIV positive.

Bisexual porn star Derrick Burts was 24 when he tested positive back in 2010. In September 2013, Cameron Bay and Rod Daily also announced they had tested positive for the virus.

Defenders of porn say the amount of safeguards in the industry, with regular tests and demands of proper hygiene should be more than enough to keep performers secure, and that those who contract HIV are doing so during off-set activities.
