As in real life, time on the web is also fleeting, especially if you’re an immensely popular website that used to dominate the www back in the day. Bigger, better sites come to take your place and you either innovate along with the newcomer or you end up on this list:

MySpace

Oh how the mighty have fallen. It’s sad to see really because MySpace was a game changer in the social networking world… until Facebook came along that is.

Friendster

Another immensely popular social networking site ala MySpace that went kaput as soon as Facebook made an appearance. Remember how we used to get constant invitations to join? Yeah I’m glad that stopped!

Hotmail.com

When it first came out, everyone had a Hotmail account. Now only your parents who don’t know how to switch to Gmail still have it. And to be perfectly honest, you look secretly look down on people who still have hotmail.com as their primary email.

Geocities

OMG who didn’t have a Geocities account? I mean really, all the gifs, blinky words in bright red because IT’S IMPORTANT AND PEOPLE WON’T SEE IT IF IT ISN’T BLINKING, the all-caps… Then blogger came and WordPress came and well… bye Geocities.

LiveJournal

The favorite online platform for the young emo kid. Every young un’ had a bad Livejournal page filled with bad poetry and drawings.

Digg

Remember when Digg was cool? Kevin Rose became the man of the hour and everyone just couldn’t live without it. Until they realized they could.

Altavista

Oh wow, I can’t even remember the days before Google came along. I mean I don’t even know how we used to search the web. Oh yeah, Altavista.

AOL

Probably just an American thing. That and the movie You’ve Got Mail.

Typepad

Perhaps there are still some Typepad journals out there, and for a while they were in pretty stiff competition with WordPress until WordPress showed them who was boss.
