Oculus Rift: "Bring On The VR Porn!"

Well, ok… the message coming from Facebook-owned Oculus Rift may not have been as enthusiastic as that, but the revelation that the company won’t be hunting down any porn that will inevitably make it to their platform comes as a welcome surprise to those who have seen the all-too-familiar tale repeat itself.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey – a perfect name for porn incidentally – told those in attendance for a panel at the inaugral Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference on Monday that “the rift is an open platform. We don’t control what software can run on it,” adding: “And that’s a big deal.”

According to Variety, Palmer’s comments were in stark contrast to the Matrix-style question dodging that the other panellists had performed throughout the Q&A.

Palmer’s comments may well breed more questions than it answers. With Facebook not exactly world renowned for its liberal attitudes to sex, nudity and pornography, it’s quite an about-turn for them to allow their latest – and maybe greatest – acquisition to open up to sex. But of course it’s no secret that adult ents are almost invariably the earliest adopters of the latest tech. We can’t strictly encourage gambling but if you were to wager on who will be buying the first batch of headsets when they are finally made available to the public in 2016, then you’ll probably get good returns for putting your money on porn consumers.

… but the cynic in us all wonders whether Facebook/OR are going to do what Periscope did: let the sexy people fill the early vacuum, give the platform some prominence then turn on them with the speed and ferocity of a jilted lover. Time will tell, but history has a habit of repeating itself. But it does beg the question of how many times we can give these companies the benefit of the doubt.
